Windows Corporate VP reiterates High-End & Enterprise focus for upcoming category-defining phones

Microsoft’s Corporate VP of Windows, Kevin Gallo has yet again confirmed that Microsoft is focusing on High-End of smartphone market with its future Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, which we fondly refer as Surface Phone. It will target enterprise customers mainly with category innovation like Microsoft claims to have done with its Surface range by sort of creating 2-in-1 devices market.

As per a report from Register,

Gallo did his best to downplay Microsoft’s pullback. “Windows Phone is fully supported. We’re fully behind it. We’re not abandoning the phone,” he said. “There’s really no change in what our direction or strategy is with respect to releasing the Windows Phone software.”

That said, he did admit to changes on the hardware side. “We’re really aligned to what we’ve done on the Windows desktop,” he said, “which is we’ll lead with some high end and category innovation like we’ve done with Surface, and OEMs will go and build the breadth of the catalog.”

At a later Windows developer user group event though, Gallo was more nuanced. The company will focus primarily on the Enterprise segment, he told attendees. Nokia’s strategy of pushing out low-end consumer devices was never going to make any money, he explained, and the business segment is Microsoft’s core strength.

This is not first time that Microsoft has revealed its plans regarding its Windows 10 Mobile Hardware. No less that Satya Nadella had earlier revealed Microsoft’s plans to bet on Continnum to create a new category of phones. From our earlier article.

In an interview Satya has talked about Microsoft’s strategy of building upon the unique capability of Continuum for Phones and expecting it to carve a new category of “Continuum Phones”. Good news is that Satya has talked about Windows 10 Mobile smartphones’ existence three year down the line.

Also while announcing the recent round of restructuring for its Phone business Satya told,

“We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation — with enterprises that value security, manageability and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same,” said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. “We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms.”

Coming to what we know about Surface Phone yet, We told you exclusively that Surface Phone may be powered by Snapdragon 830 and latest leaks / rumors originating in China not only talk about three Surface Phone variants, their RAM / Internal Storage configurations but also confirm Snapdragon 830 as the processor.
