HMD must price Nokia 8.3 better with 5G competition starting at EUR 349

HMD recently announced the first 5G Nokia smartphone Nokia 8.3 that was received favorably by fans and media alike. The only “strong” criticism was about the launch pricing of  Nokia 8.3, which looked a tad higher at EUR 599. This when HMD CPO Juho Sarvikas had hinted at a pricing around USD 500 in his many interviews and teasers before Nokia 8.3 launch.

So, the EUR 599 pricing for Nokia 8.3 is higher than what HMD made fans to expect before the launch itself. And now when competitors like Xiaomi have started launching their 5G offerings like “Xiaomi Mi Lite 10” at as low as EUR 349, Nokia 8.3 may not have the desired impact if launched at EUR 250 more than these competition offerings.

One can talk about Nokia 8.3 benefits like global 5G roaming support, better rear/front camera, better punch-hole design, PureDisplay, Android One’s near-stock Android experience and promised OS updates. But fact remains that at EUR 599 many may not even consider it in their upgrade options.

So, while we reckon that with Nokia 8.3, HMD has a real chance of making an impact it needs to be priced competitively and more wisely. Perhaps pricing it around the original envisaged price point of EUR/USD 500 would much more sense.

Nokia 8.3 is the first 5G Nokia smartphone and it is expected to come to the market in Summer. Read all Nokia 8.3 details here.
