Microsoft says no to 512 MB & 4 GB ROM Windows 10 Mobile devices in future

Microsoft has made changes to its Windows 10 Mobile‘s “Minimum Hardware specifications” and while we reported leak of Snapdragon 830 and addition of Snapdragon 820 and Snapdragon 625 to list of supported new processors there are more significant changes made by Microsoft. It seems with Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 1 aka Anniversary update there will be no devices with less than 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage in future.

Earlier Microsoft had kept it quite flexible allowing even 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage Windows 10 Mobile devices. As per the new requirements here is the minimum required RAM for various display resolutions. Microsoft has recently cancelled official Windows 10 Mobile update for devices with less than 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage.

Table 7: RAM requirements for devices that run Windows 10 Mobile

Display resolution Baseline RAM requirements Maximum RAM carve-out by SoC vendor/OEM components
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) ≥ 3 GB <= 135 MB*
1920 x 1080 (FHD) ≥ 2 GB <= 115 MB
960 x 540 (qHD)

1280 x 720 (HD/720p)

1280 x 768

800 x 480 (WVGA) to

854 x 480 (FWVGA)

Can Win10 Mobile have lite version (or modularized like desktop version or IoT perhaps) to remove those bloated software, driver or apps not usually supported/bundled in entry level phone? (NFC, sensors, advance camera features, WiFI/LTE, etc.). Or should future Win10 phones have at least 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM?

    • Kamal

As per these new details, “future Win10 phones have at least 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM”.

      • AJ Z

Yup I know about this, as Windows Insider. But judging the operation of 630, no performance nor reliability problem had occurred nor degrade so I’m hoping that like A….d One, this can be implemented to WinPhones.

still facing resuming and loading screen when opening any app in win 10 build 10586.318 shame microsoft

    • Pyrobri

Reset your phone, haven’t seen any of these issues in a long time after resetting..

      • praveen jha

Resetting 100 times. Resetting is not a perfect solution for every type of issue. Did you close background application and open the app?? Do this You will surely face the issue.

        • Pyrobri

Yes I have, every day to switch between apps. Just tried it in fact, switched between outlook, candy crush jelkly, Messaging and Camera, no issues at all..

          • praveen jha

you are the only lucky guy in this world who have no issue with windows phone. Peoples have lots of issues with bullshit windows phone. Shame microsoft

            • Pyrobri

Hardly, but you know what, if you don’t like it don’t use it!!

              • praveen jha

ya you are right but without knowing this bullshit microsoft history i had purchase lumia 640 xl. now feeling guilty. I think microsoft have to stop manufacturing mobile device.

  • IT Fritz

Sry, but 1GB RAM & 8GB ROM are nothing new

    • Xenred

1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage still supported by W10M, but the Snapdragon S4 isnt (unfortunately).

It would be nice if they at least support S4 devices since they started to work better on recent build .242. The time they surveyed devices, it was way older build that was generally unpolished, buggy and unoptimized.

Its really a matter of polish and optimzations! These things unfortunatly seems being overlooked already.

16GB Storage should be the minimum.

Windows Mobile with 8GB Storage or less will become unusable at some point as OS updates grow the footprint to nearly half that amount.. Couple that with MSN apps that accumulate 300-500MB data each, a few more apps and their data, GPS map for your state, some photos and music and 8GB is quickly eaten up.. Apps will stop installing and even updating.. 16GB storage should be the minimum for Windows Mobile for just the OS and a few apps.
    .

    • Xenred

Well were getting there but now. Its the ine that Microsoft should optimize and trim the fat that W10M is getting.

8GB storage is still average when we talk about entry-level and lower-mid-range devices. W10M needs presences in those categories and so thus more OEMs and ODMs can support Windows.

W10M should really reduce its bloatness (not by removing apps) that just continue to increase its size exponentially for a mobile OS. We already have enough bloat issue with Windows tablets out-of-the-box.

    • Ordeith

SD card support is widespread among Windows Mobile devices.

      • Bryan

But I don’t want apps installed on my SD Card.. Period.. The device should have enough storage to support a reasonable collection of apps.. 8 GB with Windows OS Bloat isn’t enough. I use my SD card for my data exclusively..

        • Ordeith

          ok, weirdo.

          • Bryan

            Was adolescent name calling necessary?

            • Ordeith

              yes.

              • Bryan

Demonstrates a lack of integrity and respect for others and their opinions.. These are things you get from effective parenting.. Something you apparently missed out on. Typical of your generation.

                • Ordeith

was the adolescent snark really necessary?

                  • Bryan

In case you are unable to interpret the language.. That remark was about your words. not you..

                    • Ordeith

                      ok, weirdo.

                    • Bryan

… then again one’s words usually define what kind of person they are. The kind of person you present yourself to be here is pretty much indefensible at this point.. 😀

                    • Ordeith

                      ok, weirdo.

                    • Bryan

When one lacks the capacity to argue or debate another person, you merely keep repeating the same thing(s) over and over, often louder and louder.. It’s all you got.. lol It must be tough sometimes for you.. Not being able to tolerate opinions that disagree with yours. Next time you may want to refrain from unnecessary name calling.. and/or pick battles you can win.. I have a legitimate reason for how I use the SD card.. and you just attacked me without even asking or understanding.. You’ll have a tough time as you grow up carrying that kind of intolerance around.

                    • Ordeith

                      ok, weirdo.

  • Subham Roni

Its better this way. They shouldn’t manufacture Dual Core budget phones. L435 lags a lot in comparison to 550 and 540.
