Update:
And as expected, Microsoft plugged the bit embarrassing Surface Phone hole and when you check now, your Lumia shows up as a Lumia. Though if you tap on you Lumia device name the should-be-there support page doesn’t open and throws open “An error occurred” page. This further confirms someone at Microsoft had directed the support to placeholder Surface Phone support page by mistake.
Original:
If you are running Windows 10 Mobile, [Either of the Redstone and Threshold] on any of your Lumias, new or old, if you open the “Contact Support” app now, you are in for a surprise. The app identifies your phone as “Surface Phone” or rather a Surface branded smartphone. We checked it on new Lumias running Redstone Build 14332 and even old Lumias like Lumia 1020 and Lumia 525 running Build 10586.218. As you can see in the first screenshot above your Lumia is now Surface Phone.
If you tap on the first option it even takes you directly to Surface support page. Well, we have been keeping you updated with info from our sources about Microsoft’s ambitious plans to bring a Surface Phone in early 2017 most probably running yet to be announced Snapdragon 830, and may arrive with Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 2 that is supposed to be released in Spring 2017.
Now, this can be a bug or just a mistake on Microsoft support’s part but it does reveal that Surface Phone or phones are in development somewhere and Microsoft is creating back-end support for them.
Thanks Panos for the tip. Cheers!!
