Will MS be able to sell Lumia without #Nokia name? Nokia’s future still may be innovative with “Advanced Technologies”.

MS is going to acquire Lumia brand from Nokia sans “Nokia” brand name!! It has licensed Nokia brand only for devices based on S40 and S30 operating systems. So, seems the thinking is that Lumia is sustainable without Nokia name prefixed before it. This is actually going to prove tough for MS. Reasons,

  • Big chunk of Lumia buyers were those ones upgrading from featurephones and not to mention who was or which brand loyalty was responsible for this conversion.
  • Nokia fans worldwide are already sad and this alienates most of them as future buyers. Word of mouth effect may be more ravaging. Anyways, other part is that MS fans will unite more behind the new MS Lumia phones.

But, this gives rise to an interesting possibility. If, MS is not making use of Nokia brand for smartphones, can Nokia use it for its own smartphones as the contract terms talk about mobile devices only, though we may be wrong here.

Microsoft has agreed to a 10 year license arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current Mobile Phones products. Nokia will continue to own and maintain the Nokia brand.  Under the terms of the transaction, Microsoft has agreed to a 10 year license arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current and subsequently developed products based on the Series 30 and Series 40 operating systems.  Upon the closing of the transaction, Nokia would be restricted from licensing the Nokia brand for use in connection with mobile device sales for 30 months and from using the Nokia brand on Nokia’s own mobile devices until December 31, 2015.

If yes, then Nokia running on Android may not be far away. If, no then let us see what the future holds.

Amid all this gloom there may be some silver lining in form of the newly minted “Advance technologies” division which is defined as,

Our Advanced Technologies business will build on several of Nokia’s current CTO and Intellectual Property Rights activities. Advanced Technologies will explore new business opportunities through advanced research, development and concept products in areas such as connectivity, sensing and material technologies, as well as web and cloud technologies. At the same time, Advanced Technologies plans to continue to build Nokia’s patent portfolio from this innovation and targets to expand its industry-leading technology licensing program, spanning technologies that enable mobility today and tomorrow.

Keywords here are patents, advanced research, new business opportunities, web and cloud technologies. We have seen some Nokia patents related to “Google glass” like display earlier and very recently as well. So, may be innovative Nokia will still live on and we may see many exciting things coming from Nokia in near future. After all this company has survived through tougher times and risen like a “Phoenix”.

for me and many others is this like a football star you love so much with the team you love so much is going to antoher club that you dont like thaaat much.
the playyer will still be a great footballer but the passion for him is gone..
For me Nokia is the Nokia Corporation not just services and devices!

Alone these amazing R6D team from Nokia is soo amazing what will they do from now on? if they quit sellin phones or tablets or whateever shouldnt they sold R&D with it??
this is a opportunity for nokia to start over from zero! 5years ago they missed the train and where always a step behind now they can take a breath gain strength and money and go for it! not with 32000 employees but maybe 500-1000!

Yes, I hope our “star footballer” will be back in consumer market. Microsoft making phones at first sounds horrible (at first it is ex Nokia employees who does it, but I am sure MS will ruin it eventually).

If I understood right, remaining Nokia still develop software (other than maps too) and owns the patents for lot of stuff so prob. they can license nice stuff to others than MS too right away. And if and when coming back in early 2016, they maybe design the phone and everything in it and buy the manufacturing of the device from subcontractors.

I am More than Sure that the Deal will bring a phone that has the best technology & innovation. Using the creativity of the best minds in Nokia & Microsoft working together. I will absolutely get the next Lumia when it comes to T-Mobile. As a Large Share Holder in Nokia, have to say that the Bump up in share price just wont heal my Disappointment. The Move is understandable, but I feel it was predetermined & not fair to the share holders of Nokia. We got burned on this one.

    • Aki

Exactly What I feel too. But for shareholders, Nokia is now able to pay divident, which is nice. But ofcourse i hoped that Stock would rise to Stars With phones in future. Nyt i am sure that remaining nokia Will come back to design, it is Still a huge company and now they Will make some serious money in meanwhile.

Thanks Kamal for this awesome site, since I have owned Lumia 920 (about a year now), I have been checking your posts regularly. Here in Finland this transaction of Nokia phones to MS, has risen huge amount of emotions in people. Mostly about how MS was not too honest and had a hidden agenda to hijack Nokia phones and knowledge and push the stock down to do it cheap. Many Finns are now thinking to move from Lumias (here Lumia is quite common) to upcoming Jolla (also Finnish design), Android or ios. Maybe you will start a website for openpoweruser that covers whole mobile range. Hopefully we see Nokia coming back to phonemarket after Dec 2015, but untill then Nokia is not so exciting company anymore… 🙁

Hey, pleasure is mine to have such awesome blog visitors!!

My short term goal is to buy as much Nokia Music as I can until Jan.2014 I think Nokia Music may be gone after the take oven. I have enough Nokia smartphones and feature phones for a lifetime. 1020,808,920,620 and two Asha’s. If Nokia does sell their tablet before the end of 2013, I’ll buy it. After that will Nokia keep it’s accessories division?

  • Shravan

Yes, loyalty was to the “Nokia” brand, but people also liked those phones. The Lumia brand of phones has been critically well received and the same group of people will (hopefully) continue to build these phones in the future, as a Microsoft subsidiary. I understand the sentiment here, but at the end of the day, if this results in phones of the same or better quality, why complain?

I’m curious, once the transition is completed, will you stop reporting on Lumias?

if this results in phones of the same or better quality, why complain?

That’s what is the biggest fear. Nokia and MS have totally different cultures and also there is some bond we have with Nokia and not MS…..

I’m curious, once the transition is completed, will you stop reporting on Lumias?

Nopes, then we will report about everything out there including Lumia without any “Nokia sentiment”. Because then Nokia will not be producing its own phones, so we can actually report about galaxies, iphones and lumias in same vein…
