A report prepared by CounterPoint has some good news for all the Nokia fans out there. The report sheds light on the Chinese smartphone market trend and while it continues to decline in the Q4 of 2018, Nokia has made headway with 30 percent YoY growth, making it the 9th top smartphone brand in China. The manufacturer however yet to touch the one percent market share in the country.
The sales volume in China fell down by 10 percent in the Q4 of 2018. Almost all the major brands including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Apple, Samsung contributed to the overall decline. Interestingly, Huawei is the only big name in the list that witnessed an upward trend in sales, making it the top brand in China.
The Research Director, James Yan blames various factor for whatever happened in the course of two years. One of the reasons besides some internal difficulties he highlighted was the ongoing trade war between China and USA.
Mengmeng Zhang, a research analyst at counterPoint also shared his thoughts. According to him as we move ahead it will be difficult for small brands to survive in the Chinese market.
Nokia here had done a fantastic job here given the magnitude and spontaneity of the decline. But that is not where the company would like to see itself in the future. It would be interesting to see at what position HMD manage to put the Nokia brand by the end of this year.
