Introduction

The Nokia T20 tablet, released in November 2021 marks the entry of HMD Global into the tablet market. The tablet has generally received positive reviews by end users who are more than happy with its performance. Unlike mobile devices that are hyped with the latest and greatest hardware, the tablet segment is slightly different. A balance between the hardware and performance matters as the tablet is rarely a primary device wither for work or play , but simply an extension to other hardwares, be it a computer or a mobile phone.

The Hardware

Marketed as budget tablet, the Nokia T20 comes in two configurations, a 3GB RAM and 32 GB storage WiFi only variant and a more complete 4GB RAM with 64GB storage with LTE connectivity. The good news here is both the models are at sale right now with the LTE unit costing less than USD 230 at the time of writing.

In my scenario, where the tablet is mainly used to complement my mobile device, I have used it extensively to read articles, editing documents on the go and even binge-watching YouTube on the go, thanks to the built in LTE connectivity. For its intended use, the Nokia T20 simply excels at what it does. Running on a bloat free Android, performance is snappy that you would not stop for a second to ponder through what is powering it underneath.

Let’s be honest, the tablet market is saturated with all types of hardware for all types of price category and needs. In short, there is one for everyone and definitely one that suits your need. But to the general population where tablet is used as an adjunct tool to get the work done, the Nokia T20 tablet is an ideal proposition. Having used many budget and midrange tablet, starting from Nexus 7 , Xiaomi Mi Pad series and even the midrange Samsung tablet,  I have to say that the T20 does offer more.

A couple of issues with the competitors are the choice of configuration where limited storage and non-expandable storage is often the case at this price segment, bloatware that slows the performance, below average battery life and the ever-important security updates.

There are many tablets these days with powerful configuration at a relatively affordable price. But in reality, we need to question where the price cut went into. Unlike mobile devices with a higher turnover rate, the same rarely occurs in the tablet market where it is usually used much longer. Having a good built certainly is an important factor that keeps the device running as intended for a longer time than just having a powerful hardware with shorter life span.

So, what makes the T20 trustable?

The Unisoc T610 processor allows the T20 to perform well, keeps the price low and allows more emphasis on its built quality and longevity. So, at a price point of less than USD 230, the T20 offers an aluminum back, with 64GB of expandable storage, built in LTE connectivity, a large 8200mAh battery in a slim 7.8mm chassis with a promise of 2years of OS and 3 years of security update. This is a feat that is a rarity at this segment!
