Microsoft: Lumia 950 & 950 XL off to a great start, demand outstripping supply.

Microsoft has today confirmed in a official Blog post that both Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are seeing strong demand and are off to a great start. The strong traction has made demand outstrip supply in many markets. We can vouch for this strong demand as in markets like US, unlocked Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have been unavailable at Microsoft Stores for long after selling out many times. Even in UK, retailers have put the device on back-order for delivery in future.

The first Windows 10 phones, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are now available worldwide and off to a great start, with initial demand outstripping our supply.  We’re working actively to resupply the many stores which ran out of initial stock.

A part of Tech Media has attributed stock-outs of Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL at some retailers like Amazon to some “issues with devices”. But in a poll conducted by us 78% of Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL owners seems fine with their devices.

I’m not sure demand is exceeding supply. I think people want them and they are being held because the high rate of return and the unresolved issues. The reviews on Microsoft’s store site are skewed because they aren’t allowing all updates. I left a professional negative review with a list of all the problems I had and links to the corresponding support thread on Microsoft’s own website and they refused to publish it. I don’t personally think it’s off to a good start. My 950 XL has had to be hard reset multiple times. It still hasn’t gotten all the updates or ANY firmware updates. Many basic features don’t work because the OS is beta. The Microsoft support forums are SWAMPED with complaints. 4 Vendors have stopped selling it – Carphone Warehouse, Amazon UK, Amazon France, and Amazon Germany because of the unusually high rate of returns and complaints. IMHO, Windows 10 on the 950 XL is a MESS.

I agree with McHale72 on this. The product just isnt ready yet, Hardware specs and design is fine (except for the sharp button edges…who got that bright idea?) Im sure in a few months the OS will be polished, but imo the launch would have been alot better with a rock solid product. I know they were under time pressure, since next gen from Apple, Samsung etc is on their way as we speak, but still it would have left new MS users with a good out of the box experience.

Ill give the Surface phone a shoot once its out, their tablet has never disapointed me.
