Interview: HMD CPO talks about Borderless Display, Nokia Superphone, Wireless charging & more

In an exclusive short interview with Nokiapoweruser team, HMD CPO Juho Sarvikas talked about some topics of much interest to our readers. The interview setup was amusingly the Metro station in Gurugram where HMD even took the media for a trip onboard a Nokia 2 themed train.

So, it was quite challenging to record this interview but we live-streamed it using our Nokia 8 on our YouTube channel. You can watch the live-streamed videos of Nokia 2 themed train and our interview with Juho on the Metro station below.

Nokia 2 themed train:

Interview with Juho Sarvikas, HMD CPO:

During the interview, Juho interestingly mentioned “Borderless display” and materials which are transparent and resilient and yet offer good radio performance as absolute areas of interest for HMD R&D team. A big hint at the upcoming flagship Nokia 9 design, we guess.

Immersive storytelling ability, advanced imaging technology in collaboration with Carl-Zeiss and pure material-led design are the key focus areas while creating any Nokia smartphone starting from Nokia 2 to Nokia 8.

Answering the question about the focus on camera performance Juho talked about sharing your life in most immersive fashion and in highest possible fidelity as areas of focus.

When we asked him about a possible Nokia superphone, Juho talked about strength to cater to every customer segment and also that HMD has no plans to slow down after launching 12 phones in last 11 months. HMD wants to be one of the major players in the smartphone market.

Juho admitted that Wireless Charging is a powerful feature on which HMD is investigating with help of evolving material technologies. He again talked about material that can offer radio performance along with wireless charging support.

I am just wondering how soon Rajeev decides to bring HMD home. Graphene has been an active areas of NRC R&D and Nokia was granted huge sums of money by EU. I have a strong feeling Nokia flexible is near ready and Nokia can shake the market now with something truly revolutionary.

Btw i am enjoying my Nokia 6 it’s very light compared to my nokia Lumia 1520 of course the wireless charging coil weighs a lot I guess.

You should have also asked about processor upgrades for existing Nokia 6. Many users are complaining about lagging, performance issues. It badly needs a processor of 6xx series.

    • Kamal

Processor upgrade?? You mean next-gen Nokia phones??

      • FkWin

Yeah. They should stop selling existing Nokia 6 and come out with something better CPU like SD625. Otherwise this SD430 in current Nokia 6 is churning out negative reviews from the reviewers as well as consumers are also not satisfied with its performance. Each and every reviewer has termed Nokia 6 as a laggy device. Moreover Nokia 6 is almost an year old. It badly needs an upgrade.

        • Kamal

The only thing you can do is to not buy Nokia 6 if you don’t like it. Most of reviews for Nokia 6 have been positive. I use one as my daily driver and it is just awesome. Great build, performance, display and camera. You can check our detailed review of Nokia 6. It will help you.

And BTW no company will stop selling its best-selling smartphone because someone wants them to do so.

I emailed Nokia this summer why they dont make a phone with graphene back and display “protection”.

From the interview, it might just happen soon.
Graphene, tough as diamond, yet flexible and a better conductor than silica. Well i found out what they are looking for at least 🙂

materials which are transparent and resilient and yet offer good radio performance

    • Kamal

Graphene will be awesome for sure 🙂

      • Prasenjit Singh Bist

At Nokia it is performance then aesthetics or material design unless Apple; so Nokia devices will always have great radio performance and no one talks about it because if it’s Nokia great radio is guaranteed 🙂

When announce N9?!) In this year?

    • Kamal

Yes, good possibility if they don’t change the plans. Expect a December unveil targeted at holidays..

      • 777sasha3331

Thank you for the answer! I hope that by December this smartphone will be launched

I hope 2018 end will see a big disruption a complete new form factor, provided the team is still employed LOL 😀
