HMD announced back in September 2023 about launch of smartphones under its own brand. HMD Global CEO Jean-Francois Baril had hinted at a new portfolio of Nokia smartphones and HMD-branded smartphone and smartphones bearing even other brands. HMD has now completed transition of its Social media and Online presence from Nokia Mobile to HMD in the first clear signs of the new strategy.

All the Nokia Mobile social media channels are now renamed as HMD Devices channels. Nokia Mobile phone sites now redirect to HMD sites. HMD has already teased new and upcoming devices under its brand name and it’s easy to guess that the launch may finally happen at MWC 2024. It is also good to notice that HMD promises “full backing and support” for Nokia-branded devices.

Good news, folks: you can keep shopping for Nokia phones, tablets and accessories at HMD.com. And, your current Nokia devices will continue to get the full backing and support they deserve, right through their warranty periods. Just head over to our support page if you have any questions.

Nokia has also announced closure of MyNokia social media accounts that used to promote Nokia-branded devices from various partners. It claims empowering brand-partners to own their online presence going forward.

So, two inferences that can be easily drawn here basis the turn of events are;

  1. Perhaps the brand-licensing strategy didn’t work as well for Nokia as they may have expected. So, while we may have more Nokia-branded devices in future from many partners but Nokia will distance itself from them even more.
  2. HMD with its experience of marketing Nokia smartphones realized that people need more than a Brand to connect to. HMD was not able to live up to the image of innovations which Nokia was always known for. So, probably HMD smartphones will come with better specs and a competitive pricing than their Nokia counterparts. After all HMD won’t need to pay brand-licensing fees on devices under its brand name.
