While the smartphone shipments in India touched 37 million in the second quarter of 2019, it also brought some cheer for Nokia fans. Nokia was one of the fastest-growing smartphone brands in Q2 2019, yet it was not one of the top 5 smartphone vendors in India, reveals the CounterPoint report.
- Top 5 smartphone brands contribution reached the highest ever level in Q2 2019.
- Realme, Asus, OnePlus and Nokia HMD were the fastest growing brands year on year.
- OnePlus shipments reached an all-time high during Q2 2019 making a place in the top ten list for the first time.
HMD has adopted an aggressive pricing strategy in recent months revising the pricing for its smartphone range to match its competitors. It has also offered some lucrative official deals from time to time on its smartphones. This is a big change over the more conventional approach adopted by HMD so far in India and it may have already shown its effect on shipments.
Nokia feature phone also gained market share in Q2 2019 and Nokia was the fourth largest feature phone vendor in India with a 9% market share.
India has been a challenging market for all smartphone manufacturers with every new brand playing the pricing-processor game to gain some early market share. HMD has been a slow learner so far but hopefully, its recently adopted pricing strategy continues for good.
