Guide: Fixing Windows 10 Mobile update & user issues. Error Codes; meaning & fixes

In this article we are covering most commonly known Windows 10 Mobile upgrade, installation and usability (user) issues and how to fix them. This tutorial is based on the experience of installing and living with all the Windows 10 Mobile preview builds released yet. Some of the issues that we are covering however seem to appear in nearly every build to someone or other amongst the Windows Insiders. We have also added Windows 10 Mobile update error codes like 801881cd, what they mean and how to fix them.

Windows 10 Mobile Build not being offered issue:

Not all devices are eligible to get Windows 10 Mobile upgrade. Here is the list of devices that can upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile. Here is your tutorial to prepare your devices and update to Windows 10 Mobile successfully for the best user experience.

Build 10581.1

Windows 10 Mobile Installation issues & workarounds:

  • Installation seems stuck at 0% for hours. What you can do is
    • Plug-in your device as in some devices there is a “Battery Saver” bug that stops download and installation of the build.
    • Try a soft reset and try downloading and installing the build again.
  • In case you see spinning gears for longer duration during update process, you should wait if gears are spinning. If gears are stuck then only issue arises. Try soft reset first and if it doesn’t work try hard reset. You can follow our reset tutorial.
  • Many times you see a blank screen once the installation is over. You should wait for 15-20 minutes as migration may be going on below that Blank Screen. This bug affects many devices and is always better to let the device do its own thing or else you may face issues.

You don’t have enough free storage space on your device to install the update.

Try removing some media files (videos, music, and photos) or apps to make room for the update. You can connect to your PC and move media files there, and you can always reinstall apps from the Windows Store. Keep in mind that deleting an app, even temporarily, will erase app data, such as saved progress in a game.

Common Windows 10 Mobile Usage issues & Fixes:

Listed below are common Windows 10 Mobile usage issues and related workarounds or fixes.

  • Start Screen corrupted post the upgrade
  • Not able to take a screenshot
  • Mail & Calendar not working
  • Settings may crash
  • Sim is not getting recognized.
  • Keyboard installation running into error.
  • Not able to add a new Mail account
  • WiFi keeps on disconnecting
  • Native Apps crashes
  • New Speech language can’t be downloaded
  • Poor Battery Life
  • Performance issues
  • Action Center not working smoothly

Generic Workaround:

In all the cases,

(First) Try a Reboot:

It should fix apps related and some other issues too.

(Second) Try a soft reset:

Volume up + power key hold till it restarts (Around 10 seconds)

(Third) Else take a back up and do a hard reset:

Go to Settings——>About——–>and you can see Reset your Phone option. You should take a backup of your content before proceeding, click here for our backup tutorial and you can try our reset tutorial in case your phone stopped responding.

(Finally) Windows Phone Recovery Tool:

This is a very useful tool that helps you to return to Windows Phone 8.1, if Windows 10 previews are too buggy to handle for you and the soft reset and hard reset have not yielded desired results. Read our tutorial.

Issue-specific Workarounds:

  • In case of Start Screen corruption, you can go to Settings > Personalization > Start and apply a different background picture or no picture and it should fix this issue.
  • If you are not able to download Keyboards or new language packs, you may need to enroll to Windows Insider app again and retry. You should be able to get these installed via Windows Update.
  • If you can’t take screenshot, just use file explorer to rename screenshots folder inside pictures folder. Let Windows recreate the folder at next screenshot trial. (Thanks to Dandun Widiyanto in comments  below).

Issues and Fixes list seen here is not final and will be updated based on feedback from our readers. Do let us know how we can improve this tutorial in comments below.

I ran an update check and tried to download and install available update Windows 10 Mobile (10.0.14393.321)”; but this gets stuck at 89%.
I have 1gb space available on the device memory.

I got the lumia 950 xl and since the last two updates I have not been able to download any emails or even sync them – no error code coming up – just not working. Anyone can help me??

My 1520 was loving the last couple of builds. The last one was fantastic. On the latest download 9-17-16 however, I can not get beyond the password screen. The number pad does not show up on the screen to put one in.
    Any ideas?

I do get 0x8000ffff error in phone update and after a soft reset the update is stuck at 0%. I am using mobile data to download and placed usage as unlimited. Still stuck here. My battery is draining very fast…. I used to sleep with 4% battery remaining and when i woke it used to be same now while even if i leave 60-80% its just remaining 4% or switched off. Frustrated. Someone help me.

Any one on here not able to access the store any more? As of yesterday (and it was working all week until yesterday) I am no longer able to access the store on my phone I just get an error page with code 0x8000FFFF 🙁
Plus my battery life is killing me since the last update. This morning it drained from 100% to 65% in the 40 minutes it took me to drive to work, and I didn’t even wake the screen never mind use it for anything. It’s now dropped to 39% and that’s while it’s been plugged in to a (not slow charge) USB port on my PC.!!!

After a recovery tool reset I am getting Error 0x80310000 but I believe it is being blocked by some sort of language update error on the 1001 build that has been present right from the recovery, Error Code: (0x80346007).
I am set up as UK but in Speech Language I have a pending download for English(United States) which I never asked for. The phone alternates between telling me to reboot because there is a language update and a system update, both of which fail to install so I am essentially now stuck on build 1001 🙁

    Lumia 930 doesn’t upgrade to 14322. Error 0x80070002. Anybody ?

    • Dries

I have the same problem, any help?

  • Chris Jenkinson

On the latest build (so obviously on insider program too) but still can’t download Australian speech pack. Says error downloading (no error code) and retry just says no updates available. If this is supposed to be the (almost) production version then MS should be afraid, very afraid!

    • Pyrobri

This sounds like the same error I just posted about, mine has the same thing but with English(United States), to try and work around it I also tried adding English(Australia) weirdly enough and that one is stuck too now, no way to cancel or remove them. You may well be getting alternating errors on reboot like I am, I didn’t notice it was two separate problems for the first few attempts as the error disappears really quickly.

  • cartman

Complete and utter bullshit from MSFT. Releasing this as “production” is bordering with retardness… Too many issues when upgrading, and even after hard reset some issues persist, such as speech language download and text predictions for non eglish keyboards. This is the last time I have bought windows phone even if that means that I will have to go back to buggy android… screw you MSFT, I’m going home

  • Dandun Widiyanto

If you can’t take screenshoot, just use file explorer to rename screenshoots folder inside pictures folder. Let Windows recreate the folder at next screenshoot trial.

    • Kamal

      Thanks. Useful tip!!

  • Puffancs

Anyone stuck at after gears screen (22 more steps “worh waiting”) from 8.1?
Step 18 at 63% for almost 2 hours.

    • Puffancs

Okay, turning the device off-on did the trick. Continues exactly from that step.
