Nokia is certainly planning something related to Camera & Android (may be other platforms too)

808 & Lumia 1020 PureView

It is getting sort of confirmed now that Nokia is planning something related to bringing its unbeatable camera quality and Android in one place. While we reported some job openings hinting about Nokia’s possible plans about bringing a “connected smart camera” based on Android, now one more job posting gives it more force.

Have a look at the job responsibilities and description which talks about taking the camera solutions to various platforms.

We are looking for passionate camera driver engineer with an eye for quality and understanding of camera software from low level drivers towards the end user applications.

Main responsibility area:

The person we are looking for will take responsibility of designing and implementation of camera drivers for different camera solutions on variety of platforms.

But the job skill set again needs Android development and camera production testing experience,

Minimum requirements

  • Solid experience on Linux kernel driver development
  • Experience on implementing camera drivers
  • Work experience in kernel software development
  • Knowledge of flash drivers

Desired skills

  • Android development experience
  • Experience on driver development for MIPI raw camera sensors
  • Knowledge of autofocus, optical image stabilization and other peripheral drivers is a plus
  • Understanding of driver level enablers for imaging algorithms and tunings
  • Experience on Camera production testing and sensor calibration
  • Theoretical background on imaging

It clearly tells us that Nokia is targeting Android or may be even again other platforms with its imaging prowess. It looks like hardware + software, but even if it is software, then Nokia is on right track in terms of cashing on one of its very strong expertise.

It’s not exactly Nokia, it is Nokia (Microsoft Mobile) who has put the job opening.
    check here:

It is from Nokia Technologies, 3rd business of Nokia. Don’t get confused, better check this page. The Nokia careers section takes one to, which is the official site of new Nokia.

So I guess this is the part of Nokia that wasn’t bought by Microsoft? If so why would MS let this slip through their fingers?

    • Kamal

Yes, you are right. Nokia never wanted to sell its core research division to Microsoft, so it was not up to Microsoft to buy them actually.

🙁 I guess WP will have to rely on something else to set it apart now. I’m not happy about this news. But I guess Nokia has to make money somehow. WP needs something big to give it a good push. And I doubt the recent news about something big coming to WP is indeed big enough.

Maybe it is just a replacement for this pureview guy, who went to Apple ???

    • Kamal

That guy left Microsoft Mobile (Nokia D&S division). Here we are talking about the new Nokia 🙂

  • And what if they are planning to develop things just to license them further?
Samsung Galaxy S6 having a mention like “20MP Nokia” at its back. 😛 JK!!

Will be waiting for what they come up 😀

    • Kamal

That will be sweet, but you don’t plan hardware if you have to just license things. These openings hint something bigger 🙂
