Nokia G42 5G Ultimate Review: Experience Redefined!

2

Introduction

I recently did an unboxing and initial review for the pink variant of the Nokia G42 5G. What I came to notice is that the pink variant which is available in UK comes with the latest security update for the month of August but the camera firmware is slightly older than the ones in India.

Real-life Experience

I recently took the G42 5G with me for a short trip to the southern tip of Thailand where I was able to test the device further. This pink variant had more attention than any Nokia device that I have used in the past and the closest rival would be the penta camera setup of the Nokia 9 Pureview. But beyond the aesthetic appeal, the G42 5G was honestly beyond my expectation.

As mentioned earlier, the build quality isgood and it looks and feels premium. The haptic feedback hits the right spot and typing was fun on this device. Audio quality is certainly a notch up thanks to the audio boost feature. The IPS LCD display with adaptive frame rate of 90Hz was adequate for my use and the finger print scanner was fast and accurate.

The 20W rapid charging filled the battery up in about 90minutes and with moderate use scenario, the device lasted for 2 days ,thanks to the large 5000mAh battery. With 11GB RAM at my disposal, daily tasks were executed with ease and the Android 13 experience was smooth and steady.

Camera Experience

Ultimately, for me, it boils down to what the camera can do. While I have been disappointed in the past with the 50 MP AI camera branding in the previous generation of Nokia devices, this actually took me by surprise. The samples below will speak for themselves. Do take note that the harsh weather during my trip may not be the most optimal test but it reflects real life use scenario and I have to say, the G42 impresses me.

Rainy day in Betong. The dynamic range impresses me.
True to life colour capture.
The new camera algorithm has a much improved portrait mode. Despite the lack of sun, it captured adequate details and accurate colour tone.

The next test is what really impresses me. The night mode on this device is excellent. It has a much more natural color reproduction and white balance compared to the more premium Nokia X30 5G!

The impressive nightmode!
A complex night scene with lighting from the billboards and street lights but its all well captured here.

Thoughts..

The G42 5G is a device that gives you more. All the right things, in the right places. This is as close as to what I would say perfection is.

The large 5000mAh battery, the robust display, 11GB of RAM and a camera that is serious about quality photography. This is a solid midranger and one that has earned its place among the very best devices made by HMD Global till date!
