HMD has started pushing January Security update 2018 along with Oreo Beta Build v5.19 to Nokia 5 running Android Oreo Beta. The January Security update brings fixes for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.

As you can see in the screenshots below the January security update for Nokia 5 is around 225.8 MB in size. You will either be prompted to download this update or you can check by going to Settings and searching system updates and then by checking for the update.

Nokia 5 Oreo Beta v5.19 update changelog:

The changelog for the update only mentions the January Security patch that brings fixes for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. It is not clear whether there are any other changes other than this as one can notice repetition of the Oreo update changelog. Read the full changelog for January Security patch update by clicking here.

Note: CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753, and CVE-2017-5754, a set of vulnerabilities related to speculative execution in processors, have been publicly disclosed. Android is unaware of any successful reproduction of these vulnerabilities that would allow unauthorized information disclosure on any ARM-based Android device.

To provide additional protection, the update for CVE-2017-13218 included in this bulletin reduces access to high-precision timers, which helps limits side channel attacks (such as CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753, and CVE-2017-5754) of all known variants of ARM processors.

HMD has been quite consistent in terms of releasing Monthly Security updates and OS updates for Nokia smartphones already available in the market. HMD has also made it clear that all Nokia Android Phones will receive minimum two years of OS update support.

Thanks Florin for the tip and screenshots. Cheers!!
