Google is rolling out a major update to its Phone app that will let Android devices — including Pixel models — record voice calls directly from the native dialer. After years of users relying on third-party apps or workarounds, this feature is now rolling out widely as part of a staged launch.
📍 What’s New?
The update adds a call recording button right to the in-call screen in the Phone app. Users can:
Tap a record button during a live call.
Automatically record selected numbers from settings.
Access saved recordings from the Home tab in the app with playback controls.
Recordings are stored locally on the phone and are not uploaded to the cloud by default.
📱 Pixel Phones Lead the Rollout
This capability is arriving first on Pixel phones with recent Android versions — typically Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 14 or later. Google is expanding the feature to more regions, with reports already showing availability in parts of Europe and beyond for eligible devices.
⚖️ Legal & Consent Requirements
Because call recording laws vary by country, Google’s implementation includes safeguards:
Notification during recording so all parties know the call is being recorded.
You may need to get consent from the other person before using the feature, depending on local regulations.
📆 When Will Everyone Get It?
The rollout is ongoing and gradual, with more devices and countries expected to receive support by the end of February 2026. The feature is already spotted in beta versions of the Phone app and will expand through regular updates as it becomes broadly available.
🔎 Key Benefits
📁 Native call recording without third-party apps
🔐 Local storage, private and protected
🙋♂️ Easy to use from the standard Phone interface
🌍 Why It Matters
For users who need to record important calls — like interviews, meetings, or customer service conversations — having built-in support means no more relying on unreliable third-party apps. It’s one of the most requested features in Android’s Phone experience after years of limited availability due to policy and legal concerns.
