The wait is officially over for Pixel enthusiasts eager to test out Google’s latest software refinements. Google has started rolling out Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2 to a wide range of eligible devices, starting from the Pixel 6a and moving all the way up to the newest hardware generations.
If you are already enrolled in the Android Beta Program, keep a close eye on your notifications for the OTA (Over-The-Air) update arriving with build number DP11.261002.005. Building upon the foundation laid out in our earlier Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 update coverage, this latest iteration brings critical under-the-hood fixes, minor behavioral adjustments, and a couple of standout user-facing features that privacy-conscious users and emoji lovers alike will appreciate.
1. Enhanced Privacy: Lock Quick Settings Connectivity Controls
One of the most requested security tweaks is finally making its way into a stable beta release. With Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2, Google is introducing a brand-new setting that allows you to lock Quick Settings connectivity tiles when your phone is locked.
In previous versions, anyone who picked up your locked phone could easily swipe down and toggle off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, or Mobile Data—posing a security risk if the device is lost or stolen, as it prevents remote tracking or network communication.
With this new update, you can now require your device to be explicitly unlocked before anyone can change those vital connectivity toggles.
How to enable it: Head over to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock or navigate to Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen to flip the switch.
This feature was previously previewed in earlier 2609 Android Canary builds, but Google has polished the underlying text strings and behavior to make it smooth and intuitive for daily use.
2. Stunning Noto 3D Emojis Arrive on Pixel 9 Pro and Beyond
If you love expressive messaging, you are in for a treat. Users updating their Pixel 9 Pro and other eligible devices to Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2 will notice the introduction of the vibrant new Noto 3D emoji collection.
Initially showcased during The Android Show—and already spotted natively on hardware like the Pixel 11—these high-definition, dimensional emojis breathe a lot of life into conversations, keyboards, and supported system apps.
Google has confirmed that the Noto 3D rollout won’t stop at Pixels. Over the coming cycles, these eye-catching assets will expand to more Google apps and select partner devices, including hardware from:
Nothing
Lenovo
Xiaomi
OPPO
OnePlus
realme
vivo
iQOO
HONOR
TECNO
Infinix
itel
Motorola
3. Under-the-Hood Fixes and Developer Notes
Beyond the visual and security additions, the secondary quarterly platform release continues to squash bugs reported by the community. According to the official Android Developers Release Notes, this update addresses a series of stability issues, framework stability quirks, and connectivity bugs that plagued earlier developer builds.
Should You Install It?
As this is still a beta software branch (QPR3 Beta 2), you might encounter minor app incompatibilities or occasional UI hiccups. However, if you are running it on a secondary device or don’t mind minor bugs, the added security of lockable connectivity toggles and the joy of Noto 3D emojis make this an update well worth downloading.
