Nokia: With our design & software, Nokia Brand-licensed products to be as good as our own products

Nokia TechWe brought to you news about Nokia going to license its brand to ODMs for manufacturing smartphones, though none of them will be out before Q4 2016. The Nokia Technologies presentation slides gave us a hint about Nokia’s plan to provide design, software and even quality control to the ODMs. Now, going through the actual webcast reveals more details about how Nokia is approaching the Brand licensing business.

Key points:

  • Nokia has its original industrial design team and software team intact in Sunnyvale, as reported by us earlier
  • Nokia plans to create fully working prototypes with Nokia design and software and then demo them to ODMs for licensing
  • A consumer will not be able to differentiate between a Nokia Brand-licensed product and a Nokia owned product as both will be similar in quality and feel
  • This holds for both Nokia hardware and software products to come in future

You can watch the webcast here.

Ah, this is great! I was worried they were going to license their brand out to any OEM like Alcatel did. The other websites that reported the news didn’t catch this part that you’ve mentioned

So Nokia will make the devices, but get the ODMs to manufacture on a large scale. Excellent.

I’m definitely buying my Nokia Android flagship when it appears on the market!
