It is a known fact that Nokia’s smartphone strategy is two-pronged: Lumia and Asha for those markets, where Lumia can’t go down enough price wise. Now, with Asha 501, Nokia has introduced new OS “Asha software platform” for Asha devices and has brought Asha devices overall experience and feel one notch up.
While Nokia has always tried to impart smartphone like experience with Asha devices, even before Asha 501, but with new swipe based OS called “Asha platform” on Asha 501 it has become really very close to full smartphone like navigation and UI experience. Now, a new API called “Nokia notifications” will bring cloud server-based “push notifications” to new Asha devices.
The Nokia Notifications API (introduced with the Nokia Asha software platform 1.0) provides a mechanism to deliver app-specific push messages from a remote server to a Java app. Notifications bring several advantages over alternative approaches (for instance, periodical server polling) including the following:
Message delivery when the app is not running
Fast message delivery
Reduced battery consumption
It is really great to see Nokia making new “Asha platform” more and more potent as a large chunk of sales still come from Asha devices.
