Microsoft just announced the latest round of Smartphone Hardware restructuring that will see most of the ex-Nokia workforce out of Microsoft. Microsoft still has emphasized that it is not out of the smartphone business but just scaling back, though it is amply clear now that the current Microsoft management was not impressed with Microsoft’s Nokia experiment and they just decided to end it. But Nokia Chairman, Risto Siilasmaa’s message on Twitter reflects the sentiments of many Nokia and Lumia fans. Many really wanted it to work out.
While I knew with certainty that the sale of handsets was a must-do for Nokia back in 2013, I wished for Microsoft to succeed with all my heart. The market deserved to have a third ecosystem. Our people who transferred over deserved to win. Their talent and perseverance through hardships earned them the right to win. I am deeply sad that it did not work out.
