Introduction
The Nokia brand is already synonymous with durable and lasting devices for many years. Under HMD Global, durability was further enhanced with the XR series, the XR20 and XR21. But in 2019, HMD also introduced their first “feature” phone with the same durability as their smartphone counter part, the Nokia 800 Tough.
Nokia 800T
A quick glance of the Nokia 800T will reveal its true nature. One that is build to take on the modern day challenges, and one that will surpass the harshest treatment possible. From its monstrous dimensions to the very visible screws around its chassis , it does looks like the Frankenstein’s monster a bit.
This is not your average “feature” phone. In fact, this one of kind phone runs on Kai OS 2.5. My experience with the Nokia 8110 4G made me stay away from any other Kai OS device simply because interacting with the device was a really painful experience. The cramped keypad on the 8110 4G with its clunky built quality, made me realize that simply re naming devices to legacy devices to boost sales , is not going to ensure lasting impressions. Once the hype of the banana phone fades away, it just collected frustrations and disappointments.
But, with the Nokia 800T, the experience is really the opposite. Large and well spaced keypads with a very durable built, lets me enjoy the Kai OS better. Each clicks and types are well registered, and I do not need to hesitate with my actions as the device can handle the interactions well.
Powered by Qualcomm 205 Platform with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of built in storage which is expandable and a smarter OS, the Nokia 800T seems to be just the right device to showcase what an ideal detox device should be. It is not smart enough or friendly enough for you to spend hours immersing your self in a digital world, but it also not totally dumb, giving you the flexibility of tapping into your social apps if the need arises, just enough for a quick interaction.
I wanted to test out the Nokia 800T much earlier, perhaps that would have changed my perception on the “unfriendliness” of the Kai OS but it is certainly a device that is tough to find, no pun intended. But the future of Kai OS is uncertain, as the current Kai OS v3 has certain limitations in its features with questionable direction due to the change in ownership. While I still standby my hope to see the rebirth of Symbian OS devices, the Nokia 800T is definitely one that is worth having.
