We had exclusively reported about HMD not planning to bring the 3G version of Nokia 3310 to the India market. The reason behind this move is the thinking amongst HMD decision makers that India is either a 2G or 4G market, we have learned from our sources.
So, while this doesn’t clearly tell us that a Nokia 4G feature phone in works, in a recent interview HMD’s India head talked about studying this opportunity very keenly.
In an interview with ET, Ajey Mehta, India VP for HMD Global mentioned JioPhone and accepted that it may have some impact on the feature phone market. He also made it clear that HMD may consider making a 4G Nokia feature phone if JioPhone does create some ripples.
“JioPhone is definitely going to have impact on the segment, and there is no question about it. We are watching how this materialises. If we see a viable business proposition, we will definitely consider it and participate,”
So, neither a definitive yes or no but strong possibility of a 4G Nokia phone in future is the real takeaway here.
