MTS customers will soon enjoy a superior mobile broadband experience, with better coverage, enhanced voice quality and faster data speeds, thanks to the modernization and expansion of its networks in Ukraine and Turkmenistan. MTS is also deploying additional 3G base stations in Turkmenistan. Nokia Solutions and Networks will provide the core network elements, radio access and services for these upgrades.

“We are launching a project to upgrade MTS networks, which will modernize networks in Ukraine and Turkmenistan by the end of 2014, extend mobile broadband coverage and increase capacity,” said Andrew Ushatsky, CTO at MTS Group. “It is a challenge to install and integrate new equipment into our existing network, without disrupting end user services. I am sure that our specialists in cooperation with NSN’s experts will ensure a swift execution of this project, thus improving the quality and safety of voice and internet services for our customers.”

Under the contract, the core network elements deployed include NSN’s Mobile Softswitching (MSS) systems and Multimedia Gateway (MGW) to handle MTS voice and multimedia services. The NetAct network management system will be upgraded to monitor, manage and optimize the complete network.

NSN will also deliver its Single RAN* (radio access network) platform, based on the energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station**. The multi-technology platform will help modernize a large part of the existing sites. Additionally, the company will deliver its Multicontroller Platform for the 3G Radio Network Controller (RNC), 2G Base Station Controller (BSC) and related 2G Transcoder (TC). The Multicontroller Platform will further increase the flexibility and efficiency of MTS’ single radio networks.

The scope of the deal also includes a complete range of services, such as network implementation, planning and optimization, systems integration and a full set of care services comprising hardware, software and competence development services.

“To manage the continuing growth in mobile broadband demand and deliver the best possible quality of service, operators need to upgrade and optimize their networks, while maintaining cost efficiency,” says Sergei Cherepnin, MTS Ukraine and Belarus customer team head at NSN. “NSN will help MTS meet these aims profitably, providing superior data and voice services to its customers today while preparing its network for tomorrow’s challenges”.
