Jolla is the company that branched out of the original team that created the Nokia N9. While MeeGo ( collaboration between Nokia and Intel) ended prematurely, the OS was dichotomized into Tizen (Samsung) and Sailfish OS( Jolla). The reason for the existence of Sailfish OS is because instead of calling it quits and taking a severance package of some sort, the creators of MeeGo did not give up and continued to defy the odds against them to refine the OS and launched the Jolla Phone, the first modular device with promising hardware and software.
But, the world of technology is not kind to any beginners , more so, if your resources are limited, and that explains the many troubles ahead that Jolla faced with their line of products, including Jolla Tablet, Jolla C1 and Intex Aqua Fish. But, the small team that manages Jolla, continue to hold their fort, continue to move forward despite all these challenges and announced the Jolla C2 recently, running the Sailfish OS 5.
The story of an underdog, rising against all odds resonates with each and every one of us. Jolla’s resilience in facing this ever dynamic and often unforgiving mobile world is truly commendable. For many of us, including myself, having owned the Nokia N9 when it was launched, falling in love with the fabula design and a swipe based OS, appreciating the work put into creating an experience that is not under the influence of any watchful eyes, the success of Jolla became our own fight. The community edition is a device made to appreciate the efforts of these small group of people that continue to shoulder on the journey that started with the Nokia N9.
Jolla C2 Community Edition
Announced in late May 2024 , slated for August release the same year, the Jolla C2 started shipping out in late September in small batches. A 1000 unit of the Community Edition device was made for a price tag of €299 . My unit was ready by October but it just reached my hand quite recently. The device is made by another Europe Manufacturer, Reeder, based in Turkiye and has a modest specification as this is the reference device for the latest Sailfish OS 5.
Jolla C2 comes with a 12 month Sailfish OS full license subscription that is valued at €59.88. This provides access to all releases, commercial components, features and upgrades. After one year, you can freely choose to continue the subscription and support the OS development further or continue to use the device but it will lack the support of future software release and feature upgrades.
As a reference device , the Jolla C2 is bound to have bugs and glitches. The C2 experienced some issues while booting up affecting a significant number of owners and many had to return their devices back to Jolla to flash to the latest update which solves this issue.
This is my experience of unboxing the C2 and I will share here with you the exact steps that ensured the device boot up well and functions without the dreaded issue above.
Do take note that the Jolla C2 is still a work in progress and it may not be ready to be a daily driver just yet but having witnessed first hand the incredible support for the Jolla Phone, I believe the experienced will improve over time. Thankfully, it seems that Jolla might just have another round of sales for the C2 or you can install the Sailfish OS 5 in supported Xperia device.
