HMD OFFGRID

HMD recently introduced the Off Grid, a satellite communication device that can pair with your existing Android or iOS devices to be connected in areas where your network may fail you.

The device looks similar to the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, and that is because HMD partnered with Bullit to build the Off Grid. Bullit is a company that produces rugged devices and unfortunately, the company went into some trouble and the remaining work force collaborated with HMD for this unique accessory.

While it looks similar, the Off Grid has some subtle changes to it ,that makes it a compelling accessory to have, especially if you enjoy trekking and exploring places with patchy network.

It comes in a packaging that is slightly different than any of HMD’s previous packaging for accessories and comes included with a USB A to Type C cable. The device is made of plastic and weighs a mere 60g. The built in 600mAh battery is stated to last for 3 days but the report from CNET during the initial launch indicate that the battery life is actually up to 10 days, and the 3 days quoted is with the live tracking activated with periodic updates. The IP68 and MIL-STD 810H means that the device is durable and is meant to survive the rough and challenging terrains or weather.

While more phones are now having built in satellite communication services, having an accessory that can just dangle from your backpack, pants or even tied around your wrist for easy access seems to be a better option than having your premium phone exposed for the same use scenario.

The Off Grid is an ideal accessory with affordable plans to compliment your journey and trips where network connection can be patchy. Having a separate accessory for satellite communication, with premium SOS service bundled in will definitely give you and your loved ones a peace of mind.
