If you have ever felt constrained by Android’s default layout or struggled with clunky multitasking on foldable devices, Google is tackling both issues head-on. The latest Android Canary build 2608 has officially landed, introducing two major user experience upgrades: a dedicated Quick Settings layout editor and intuitive multitasking app handles designed with foldables in mind.

First highlighted by Android researcher Mishaal Rahman and detailed across NokiaPowerUser’s Android update hub, this update offers a clear look at how Google is refining system UI customization and large-screen workflows.

As always, Canary builds are highly experimental, packed with bugs, and strictly intended for testing—not your primary daily phone!

1. Take Full Control with the Quick Settings Layout Editor

Android’s notification panel and quick toggles have long felt rigid compared to third-party OEM software. Build 2608 opens up deep customization across the entire shade:

  • Rearrange & Group Toggles: Easily reorder, swap, and group your favorite action tiles based on what you actually access every day.

  • Edit the First Swipe (QQS): Customize the Quick Quick Settings view—the condensed row that appears on your initial swipe down—so your top-priority controls are immediately reachable.

  • Reposition the Media Player: Prefer media controls near the top? The layout editor lets you move the media player block, even placing it directly above your top-row quick toggles.

  • Adjust Brightness Bar Placement: Tweak where and how the brightness slider is positioned inside the layout.

2. Next-Gen Foldable Multitasking: Interactive App Handles

For large-screen and foldable devices, build 2608 introduces a slick multitasking upgrade in the form of universal app handles:

  • Seamless Split-Screen Transitions: A physical handle bar sits on top of active apps. Simply drag the handle to smoothly transition a full-screen application straight into split-screen mode, or drag it back to expand a split window back to full screen.

  • App Bubble Scaling: Floating conversation bubbles now feature the new handle. Dragging an app bubble’s handle instantly pops it out into a full-screen app window.

  • Quick Context Menu Shortcut: Alternatively, tapping the handle opens a context menu with a new direct “Move to fullscreen” option for effortless window management.

Other Features & Notable Changes in Build 2608

Beyond layout tools and multitasking, Google packed several additional under-the-hood updates into this release:

  • AI-Generated Lock Screen Clocks: Early UI code references suggest Google is working on letting users generate custom lock screen clock designs using generative AI prompts.

  • System App Lock Returns: Native, system-level app locking settings continue to receive privacy and UI refinements.

End of the Line for Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro

There is one important hardware notice included in this release: Android Canary 2608 is officially the final Canary build for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

If you are currently running a Pixel 6 series device on the Canary channel, you will need to flash back to a stable production build to continue receiving future Android releases. Going forward, the Canary track will strictly support Pixel 6a and newer hardware.

Should You Update?

Unless you are a developer or have a dedicated secondary test device, it’s best to hold off. Canary builds are bleeding-edge, meaning performance hiccups, app crashes, and battery drain are expected.

However, because these features are already running smoothly in early testing, we expect both the Quick Settings editor and foldable app handles to land in broader Beta channels soon. For ongoing updates on upcoming Android releases, stay tuned to the NokiaPowerUser Android news portal.
