Google is keeping up the momentum in its testing pipeline. Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 has officially started rolling out to eligible Pixel smartphones, bringing a healthy mix of UI customization, foldable multitasking upgrades, and crucial security protections.

If you have been tracking the rollout across recent builds, catch up on previous milestones through our full Android 17 QPR2 coverage or check where your phone stands on our Android 17 Eligibility List and Release Date Tracker.

Here is a complete, hands-on breakdown of everything new, what’s changed, and what’s fixed in Beta 3.

Keep in mind: Beta software is fluid by design. Features currently being tested might evolve, change, or be pulled before reaching the final stable release.

1. Quick Settings Finally Gets a Proper Layout Editor

If you’ve ever felt restricted by rigid system toggle placement, this is the highlight of the build. Beta 3 introduces a dedicated Quick Settings layout editor.

Rather than sticking to default arrangements, you can now freely reorder, organize, and tweak the layout of your Quick Settings panel to suit how you actually hold and use your device. Put your most-used toggles right under your thumb and push secondary controls out of the way.

2. Expanded Color Controls & System-Wide Blurs

Google is giving the UI another layer of visual refinement, refining Material You styling across several core system elements.

Granular Color Customization

Features that were previously restricted to Canary builds are now accessible to more beta testers:

  • Hue Adjustment Slider: Fine-tune system accent colors down to precise shades.

  • Four Main Color Styles: Choose between distinct color engine palettes for a more personal look.

Frosty System Blur Everywhere

Visual aesthetics get an upgrade with expanded Gaussian-style blur effects. Key UI elements featuring richer background blur include:

  • Lock screen action shortcuts

  • The on-screen fingerprint scanner target area

  • Floating notification shade cards

3. Smarter Multitasking for Foldables & Large Screens

Multitasking on foldables and tablets often comes down to efficiency. Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 introduces two smart refinements to speed up how you interact with apps:

  • Window App Handles: Active windows now display a small handle at the top edge. Pulling this handle down instantly transitions a full-screen app into split-screen mode—or dragging it up snaps a split app back to full screen.

  • Streamlined Bubble Mode: Converting a Chat Bubble into a full-screen window takes fewer steps. The “Move to fullscreen” option has been relocated directly to the top of the context menu.

4. Tougher Protections Against Call-Forwarding Scams

Phone scams rely heavily on tricking users into executing secret MMI/USSD code strings that redirect incoming calls. Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 adds a strong two-part defense against these social engineering attacks:

  • Automatic USSD Restrictions: The OS now selectively parses and restricts automated background execution of call-forwarding codes (such as *21*) sent through the TelephonyManager.sendUssdRequest() API.

  • System Dialer Safeguards: If you manually dial a call-forwarding code inside the stock Phone app, Android now pauses the process and displays an OS-level confirmation dialog warning you before the command actually executes.

5. VM Link Handling Upgrades in the Terminal App

For developers and power users utilizing Android’s built-in Linux Terminal environment, managing web links clicked inside Virtual Machines (VMs) is now much more convenient:

  • Auto-Forward to Host Browser: Automatically route web links clicked inside a VM straight to your primary Android phone browser.

  • Keep Links in VM: Keep link handling isolated inside a web browser running inside the VM environment itself.

6. Critical Bug Fixes Included in Beta 3

Beside new features, Google squashed two major bugs that were causing headaches in earlier preview builds:

Bug FixedWhat Changed
System UI CrashPulling down the notification shade or Quick Settings no longer triggers visual corruption or unexpected device reboots.
False Battery WarningsFixed a false-alarm issue where the Device Health and Support tool displayed incorrect battery capacity degradation warnings.

How to Get the Update

If your device is enrolled in the Android Beta Program, Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 will arrive automatically as an over-the-air (OTA) update. Head to Settings > System > Software updates to trigger the download.
