The Detox Mode is finally here for the HMD Skyline along with the September security update that also fixes critical camera bug issues.
Detox Mode
The detox mode for the HMD Skyline is a brilliant feature that gives the users the opportunity to detox even with a smartphone.
The Detox Mode is accessible as a widget that can be accessed once its pinned to the home screen. Once you click on it, then you would see that the Detox Mode is not simply a feature that dumbs down your device or restricts your phone performance.
Apps are curated under specific headings that can be selected to be used with the Detox Mode or completely blocked if you wish not to use it.
Similarly, you can select the contacts that can reach you during this period as well as block those that is not important.
The mode can be scheduled for a certain time period based on your preference and it can also be scheduled to be activated for a certain time period each day, quite similar to the DND (DoNotDisturb) mode.
Then there is a Soft Lock and Hard Lock feature. Once in Detox Mode, you can deactivate it earlier either through the widget itself( Soft Lock) or through rebooting the device (Hard Lock). I believe this is something useful for those who may have a hard time focusing on being in the zen mode!
The Detox Mode as I have mentioned earlier is not a mode that dumbs down your device or throttles your performance. It allows you to completely zen out if you wish so, or to continue focusing on a particular app or task without the distraction of other aspects of the device which is what makes it powerful. Essentially, you do not need a separate weekend device.
Camera Bugs Fixes!
So, HMD has issued a newer camera firmware that finally fixes the focus bug issue that has been there since the release. This allows accurate lock onto subject from the primary camera and I also notice much better output from flash shot with auto tracking option!
The video stability at 1080p and 4k is finally optimized but I have to say that the 60FPS option at 1080p is buttery smooth! When it comes to the Ultra Steady Mode, HMD’s latest update only partially fixed the issue with the frame rate. At 1080p, there is no drop in frame rate but I notice a wobbly effect on the lower half of the recordings with each step which might be contributed from the OIS movements. At 4K, its less noticeable probably due to cropping ,but the frame rate is not at 30FPS.
As mentioned before, the current management from HMD continues to listen to the feedback and issue fixes and this gives me the confidents that they will continue to improve the Skyline.
