We recommend doing a fresh install of Windows 10 Mobile by first doing a Hard Reset on your Windows Phone 8.1 phones and then checking for updates. Though you must take a Backup before going for Hard Reset, so that you can recover Apps Settings, Messages, Start Screen Layout and more once updated. Our Backup tutorial will guide you here. Microsoft will notify and we will keep you updated when Windows 10 Mobile is pushed for your device. You can also check for updates by going to Settings > Phone Update and tapping Check for updates.

This ensures that you get the best windows 10 Mobile experience on your Lumia devices after updating. Read our Hard Reset tutorial for doing a hard reset and preserve a backup to recover it when you are updated to Windows 10 Mobile.

How To update to Windows 10 Mobile (Video):

Download and install Update Advisor app from here. Run the app to see if the update is available. Check the screenshot above which comes up when update advisor checks your device and tells you whether the Windows 10 Mobile update is available for your device. If it is available then select Enable Windows 10 upgrade.

The Upgrade Advisor app can also help free up space on your device so you’re ready for the upgrade. If your device is eligible for the upgrade, you may need to free up some space to get it. The app will recommend files, such as videos or photos, that you can temporarily move to OneDrive or an SD card, if you have one installed. Accept the recommendations, or change which files you want to move. You can also delete some files, if you want. If you move files to OneDrive, you need to use the app to restore files back to your device after Windows 10 Mobile is installed.

You can check this official video to see the Update Advisor app in action.

Windows 10 Mobile update requirements:

  1. You will need to have Windows Phone 8.1 OS version 8.10.14219.341, or higher installed. Check by going to Settings–>About–>more information.
  2. You may need to have up to 1.5GB (depending on the phone model and software release) free phone memory to ensure that the software update goes smoothly. If you don’t have enough free space in your phone memory, you may be able to update the phone using a memory card. This is available for some of the phones running Lumia Denim (OS version 8.10.14219.341, or newer).
  3. Charge your phone. Before starting the update, connect to a charger or make sure your phone has enough battery power (at least 50%).
  4. Be online. Your phone supports wireless Over the Air (OTA) updates and there is no need for cables or a computer; you can simply download and install the update using your phone.

Making Space on your Phone:

To check the available free space, go to Settings > storage sense. If you don’t have 1.5 GB free phone memory on your device, you can do the following:

a) Move some apps to MicroSD card, if your device supports that. You can use official “Files” app to move other data like music, videos etc to MicroSD card.

b) If your device doesn’t support MicroSD card, you can

Delete browsing history, temporary files, cookies and saved passwords in Internet Explorer (Settings > applications > Internet Explorer > delete history).

Delete previous map searches and temporary files from your phone (Settings > applications > maps > delete history).

Delete Bing search history, including Bing Vision and Bing Music searches (Settings > applications > search > delete history).

Remove old Office documents from your phone: Press Start, swipe left, and select Officeplaces (locations) > phone. Long press any document and then select Delete.

Remove offline mixes from MixRadio: Press Start, swipe left, and select MixRadio > offline mixes. Long press any mix and then select Delete.

If still you don’t have required 1.5 GB space, you can either uninstall some apps or if you have a PC, do the following,

If you have a PC, connect your phone to a computer with a compatible USB cable. On your computer, use File (Windows) Explorer and do one of the following:

a. Browse to the phone folder of your Windows Phone. Move content like music, videos, pictures and office documents to your PC.

b. If your phone supports the SD card storage, browse to the SD card folder. Open the Pictures folder and move photos to your PC.
