Why prioritizing Lumia 950, 950 XL & 550 for new Insider Preview Builds may backfire

Build 14251

Microsoft’s decisions around Windows 10 Mobile have not been very wise to say the least. First the development took too much time and one of the major reasons behind that was more focus on PC builds though one can argue about Microsoft’s priority. Then when Microsoft released the first Windows 10 Mobile running devices, the Build that they ran out of the box posed issues to many new users. This in spite of Microsoft running a big “Insider Preview” program of which we all enthusiasts have been a part. Perhaps, Microsoft needed to take a pause and analyze why it was not being able to channelize and use the feedback provided by the huge Insiders’ pool.

Well coming to subject of this article, now Microsoft has shared that it will prioritize Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 550 for receiving future “Insider Preview Builds” and then the communique vaguely mentions “and expand from there as we release Windows 10 Mobile to other devices”.

Today we deliver our 4th PC preview build, and are nearly ready to start sharing new preview builds for Mobile as well. We will start by making these builds available to devices that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile – the 950, 950XL, and 550 – and expand from there as we release Windows 10 Mobile to other devices.

Now coming to reasons of why we think this is one more unwise decision and may backfire,

  • Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 550 users make a very small part of the Insider pool and if Microsoft wasn’t able to use feedback from all Insiders to review builds earlier, I have serious doubts over how Microsoft would be able to judge the builds now with such small Feedback pool.
  • When the new Redstone builds are supposed to bring more bugs and issues because of news features payload, why would anyone like to have it on daily drivers which in most case would be the new Lumias. One more fail!! The existing Insider devices could have made more sense for newer builds.
  • So, while this prioritization itself doesn’t make much sense, most if not all the Insider devices are still on Windows 10 Mobile and why should Microsoft wait for release of Windows 10 Mobile to older devices. Or, is this some kind of miscommunication??
  • If Microsoft goes ahead with this, it will disappoint many enthusiastic users. The delay in release of Windows 10 Mobile to older devices has already taken a toll, with this decision now Microsoft is making Insiders resentful.
