Why HTC 8X isn’t such a threat to Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 variant with a HD screen can be too hot for the competition.

HTC launched two WP8 based smartphones 8X and 8S yesterday and tried to suggest that somehow 8X has become the hero device of Windows Phone 8 eco-system !!

“It will be a joint marketing campaign where our devices will be the signature devices, almost the face of Windows Phone 8 in the marketing collateral with Microsoft.

So, the comparison of 8X with two WP8 Lumias become inevitable. Why both, because if you have a look at the specs and extras that 8X has to offer, it frankly speaking doesn’t feel like a competition to Lumia 920. It has 4.3 inch HD screen but only 16 GB storage without microSD card slot. In terms of highlights it has “Beats audio” and a FFC which captures 1080P video, first time for a smartphone. But it doesn’t look like a match to amazing innovative features that Lumia 920 brings along with itself.

  • Puremotion HD+ display, first time a refresh rate of more than 60 Hz.
  • Super sensitive touch which is workable even with gloves on, nails, cloth and what not.
  • PureView Camera with OIS and amazing low-light performance
  • Wireless Charging
  • Rich-recording
  • Dolby Surround sound

Lumia 920 looks too power-packed for a comparison with 8X. So, HTC still has to get the “Hero” device it seems 🙂

Now coming to comparison with Lumia 820. These two devices look evenly matched and just have a look at where one of them has got upper hand on the other and where are they matched.

Lumia 820 over HTC 8X:

  • Wireless charging
  • MicroSD slot
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 8 MP Carl-Zeiss lens
  • CBD display with great outdoor visibility

HTC 8X over Lumia 820:

  • Screen resolution of 1280 x 720 with 342 PPI
  • FFC, 2.0 MP and 1080p video capture

Where both are evenly matched:

  • Beats Audio vs Dolby Surround sound
  • Screen size
  • 1.5 GHz dual core processor
  • 1 GB RAM

Just pondering, if Nokia could have packed Lumia 820 with a CBD AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution, it could have changed the game completely. Now it matches or rather overodoes HTC’s WP8 flagship in many ways. With a HD display, it was an out and out killer device if Nokia keeps its price mid-range as has been expected :).

We know a variant of Lumia 820, Lumia 822 is coming to Verizon. Hope it packs a HD screen, because if it does that then tough times are ahead for Lumia’s competition. If, not Nokia must consider bringing a Lumia 820 variant with HD display.
