Apple vs Nokia

Contrary to what recent Kantar report suggests, according to Counterpoint Research, Nokia and Windows Phone may have outsold iPhone and iOS for month of August in China.

Android OEMs captured a combined record 96 percent share during the same period. While Samsung saw its share dipped to 15 percent, Lenovo maintained the number two spot with 11 percent smartphone share. Meanwhile, Nokia (and Windows Phone) surpassed Apple (and iOS) thanks to better movement for lower-priced models such as Lumia 520.

Still, both iOS and WP count for only 4% market share of total 30 million units sold in August. The real volume growth driver in August was the sub-USD 200 price band smartphones and Android phones captured 96% of the market. Surprisingly Samsung just had 15% of the sales share, with local vendors responsible for most of the contribution. For Nokia it was Lumia 520 and lower-priced models which did the job.

Most of the contribution came from the domestic players such as Lenovo, Huawei, Coolpad, Xiaomi, and ZTE boosted by their broader smartphone portfolio and expanding distribution reach. These vendors realized healthy sell-through after a channel inventory built-up in July, according to Counterpoint Research. As a result, Android OEMs captured a combined record 96 percent share during the same period. While Samsung saw its share dipped to 15 percent, Lenovo maintained the number two spot with 11 percent smartphone share.
