Nepal is going through a digital transformation like any other countries. Nokia is reportedly going to play a major role in Nepal’s digital transformation as the company now at the helm in providing solutions to augment its Internet speed. Vianet, a famous Internet Service Provider in Nepal, has signed a multi-year agreement with the Finnish company and to honor the agreement Nokia will deploy over 100K of its GPON(Gigabyte Passive Optical Network) Optical Network Terminals(ONT)s.

Expanding beyond the metropolitan area of Kathmandu, the new fiber network will also enable Vianet to more effectively address underserved areas across Nepal and further increase broadband penetration.

Nokia also gave us some benchmarks. Vianet will be able to provide as much as 2.5Gbps speed per subscriber with the Nokia’s GPON fiber solution. This, in turn, would mean an increase in users engagement with 4K content, online gaming, Internet TV, and not to mention the powerful future devices that will require remarkably fast internet.

Vianet is expecting to connect at least 200K  customers by 2019 by deploying an FTTH(Fibre-To-The-Home) across the country.

Going forward, the existing subscribers will be given the option to upgrade their current bandwidth up to 100Mbps which will eventually boost the overall engagement.
