One of the complaints we had heard from many Nokia Android smartphone users was the lack of native or carrier video calling option. But that changed with the arrival of the Android 8.1 Oreo update.

All the Nokia Android smartphones that run Android 8.1 Oreo or higher so far have carrier video calling enabled by default. Check the screenshots above that shows the video calling option in the call history and also the video calling UI from an actual video call.

Keep in mind that the availability of video call option may still depend upon our mobile operator. All these screenshots are taken from the Nokia smartphones using Airtel SIM. It is also mandatory that the person you are calling should have a phone + operator combination with video call option enabled.

How to place a video call:

This can be done in two ways.

  • Either go to the contact or call history and use the video call option as can be seen in the first screenshot below
  • Once in the voice call, the other party can switch to video call by the option provided in the UI as shown in the screenshot below.

How to enable/disable operator video calling:

You can check, enable and disable the new “Carrier video calling” settings by following the steps below. Check the screenshots below. This works for all Nokia Android smartphones running Android 8.1 Oreo.

Steps:

  • Go to Settings–>Network & Internet–>Mobile Network
  • Now tap on Advanced and you will see “Carrier Video Calling” option
