398079-nokia-and-microsoftA report from Bloomberg claims Microsoft may announce job cuts as soon as this week. These job cuts may be the biggest for Microsoft in last 5 years and will impact ex-Nokia workforce, which Microsoft added as part of its deal to buy Nokia’s Devices and Service division, amongst others.

The reductions — which may be unveiled as soon as this week — will probably be in areas such as Nokia and divisions of Microsoft that overlap with that business, as well as marketing and engineering, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The restructuring may end up being the biggest in Microsoft history, topping the 5,800 jobs cut in 2009, two of the people said. Some details are still being worked out, two of the people said.

Last week, Satya Nadella had issued a letter addressing Microsoft employes, which has hinted about some restructuring in the organization but lacked any direct or indirect reference about manpower reduction.

Microsoft had 127,104 employees as of June 5, after adding about 30,000 in its acquisition of Nokia’s handset unit. Nadella had declined commenting on job cuts during his interviews post release of this Memo and said that he would provide more details about his memo during Q4 earnings release on July 22nd.
