Micromax planning to Produce WP running Devices by mid-2014; Admits ‘Nokia with Android’ could’ve been a big threat

While I’m still in shock about where my favorite handset brand which I’ve known since childhood is going, there are many companies (almost every) out there that have enjoyed Nokia’s demise. One such Indian company is Mircomax which has benefited hugely and has captured majority of the mid-range smartphone sales on its way to become the 2nd or 3rd largest smartphone vendor in the country.

In an interview when Micromax’s CEO, Rahul Sharma was questioned about the impact of the deal between Nokia and Microsoft, Rahul mentioned

It has been good for us because they have chosen to stick to the Windows operating system. Had they chosen Android, it would have been a threat for us. But now we’re certain that they will not look at Android, which means lesser competition for us.

Nokia was seriously considered the god of mobiles in India when Micromax joined the scene, however for Nokia it’s been a steep fall thereafter and a strong growth for Micromax. Sure the situation could’ve been different had Nokia chose some other platform, but how different is pretty hard to guess.

Adding further, Rahut did mention the company’s interest in making devices running Windows Phone as well and we might see them selling a WP powered phone in the next year.

We are working on a Windows Phone and you might see something from us around mid of next year.

Micromax is also getting ready to produce 4G devices and expanding the company’s device portfolio outside of India. So there’s really a nice future for them. I’d wish them Good Luck with their future ventures.
