As per the report shared with us by CounterPoint Research, Nokia smartphone shipments crashed to only 2.8 million in Q4 2019 resulting in a 41% decline as compared to Q4  2018 shipments. The smartphone shipments declined by 27% on a Year-over-Year basis.

While one can see a growth of 1% in Nokia feature phone shipments on a QoQ basis, there is a decline of 17% in feature phone shipments on a YoY basis.

According to Counterpoint Research, the tough competition provided by Chinese OEMs in the mid-segment that HMD loves to focus on has eroded its market share.

This is the second consecutive quarter of smartphone decline for Nokia HMD. This can be attributed to the tough competition it is facing from the Chinese OEMs in the mid segment. The OEM is being outcompeted by a higher refresh rate of portfolio of Chinese OEMs, bringing industry first features to the lower price band quickly coupled, with aggressive distribution and marketing strategies.

This is especially valid in markets like India that has seen very aggressive product offerings by the likes of Realme with the latest high-end processors and features in low to mid-price segments. In comparison, HMD has chosen to bring Nokia 6.2 and 7.2 employing older processors like Snapdragon 660 and 636 that has attracted lots of criticism by prospective buyers.
