HMD owns Nokia (Lumia) Camera UI design trademark now via ownership transfer

7

HMD, the entity created to bring Nokia Android Phones to market has launched its trio of Nokia 3, 5 and 6 already. The Camera UI on Nokia Android Phones has however seen mixed reception. It is a custom app only available on Nokia Android Phones.

But now it seems we can hopefully see a familiar and a highly innovative Camera UI on Nokia Android Phones in future. Yes, we are talking about the original Nokia Camera aka Lumia Camera UI that has now also found place on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile as the native camera UI.

HMD has recently got the trademark for this Camera UI transferred to itself from Microsoft. Microsoft has license to use Nokia IPR and technology in its produts but HMD is the rightful owner of these as per the agreement between HMD, Microsoft, Foxconn and Nokia.

If you check the trademark listing you can see that the transfer of trademark ownership from Microsoft Mobile Oy to HMD Global Oy has happened on July 26, 2017. So, HMD can easily use this UI in its Nokia Android smartphones. This will be a great step as existing Camera UI on Nokia 3, 5 and 6 has not really received very favorable reviews.
