With the roll-out of Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586.29 as OTA update to all devices running Windows 10 Mobile across the globe, Microsoft has lived up to the hopes of Lumia and Windows Phone fans. This is the first instance when Microsoft has released Windows phone software update without caring for carrier restrictions.

Though it is clear that Microsoft may have worked in background to get carriers on-board but it is a big step in right direction and hands over certain advantage to Windows 10 Mobile over Android. Google in spite of its efforts and launch of Android One range has not been able to match iOS in global update roll-out to all devices regardless of unlocked or carrier variants.

Microsoft may finally be able to match Apple in control over updates and after a global roll-out of Windows 10 for PCs and Tablets, it has done it for Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 550 today. The scale may look small but it is indeed a commendable step in right direction.

Microsoft may release Windows 10 Mobile software update soon to Windows Phone 8.1 devices and one may hope that it can repeat the global roll-out strategy. It will be quite a feat but the carriers coming on-board for all eligible devices remains a challenge and the fact that Microsoft has released a list of devices getting the update first, we may see waves of major roll-outs.
