• On Monday, February 27, the first day of Mobile World Congress, Nokia will host a press conference, where it will announce significant industry news.

• The press conference will be hosted by Stephen Elop, Nokia’s president and CEO. Due to the pending public transportation disruption, doors will be opened, and accredited media admitted starting at 08:00 a.m. CET.

Nokia has made it clear that only accredited media will be allowed to attend it. This speaks volumes about the importance that this conference might hold. Read more from Nokia press release.

This was really quick and expected. Nokia  sold more smartphones powered by Windows Phone operating system than any other company in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

According to the firm’s report,

• Nokia accounted for 900,000, or 33%, of the 2.7 million Windows Phone devices sold during the period.

• The impact of Nokia adopting windows phone platform was for everyone to see as fourth-quarter  shipments of Windows Phone 7-based devices were up 36 percent compared to the  third quarter, reaching 2.7 million units

• The research firm said Nokia’s Microsoft smartphone growth during the quarter was achieved partly by capturing market share from HTC .

“An expanded portfolio of Windows Phone 7 models, such as the Lumia 800, an  increased retail presence and highly visible marketing campaigns across several  European and Asian countries drove Nokia’s growth,” Strategy Analytics executive  director Neil Mawston said today in a statement. “Nokia is by no means out of  the woods yet, and it is still on a long road to recovery, but capturing top  spot in the Microsoft smartphone ecosystem is an encouraging baby-step forward  for the company.”

Officially announcing the availability of  First Microsoft Apps update , Nokia told that the update will start reaching to devices from this week.

• The update is  available for the Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7, Nokia Oro, Nokia 700, Nokia 701, Nokia 603 right away, and later for Nokia N8, Nokia E6 and Nokia 500.
• The update will be delivered via the software update app (OTA) on your phone, and pre-condition is that you’ve updated to Nokia Belle.

But as reported earlier many users were able to get the update in last weeks. So may be the official announcement has come bit late .

So there are many out there who love N9′s for its elegant simplicity but also want it to be a bit customisable. So we are reporting two hacks/apps project which give widgets to N9′s interface.

This is the first one and we couldn’t find a name for this. Read the description given by developer below along with screenshots and download and source link,

Even if I love the N950′s UI with it’s 3 pages, I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of widgets. So I decided to implement (yet another) widget system. The widget system tries to be universal, and tries to be able to mimic any widgets interface. Currently, it mimics Maemo 5 widgets but at the end it will be able to mimic HTC sense, Samsung TouchWiz … Anything you want … The only drawback is that it is just an app.

At least this application has got a name. It is known as WidgetCanvas. Read the description given by developer below along with screenshots and download and source link.

WidgetCanvas is an application to bring desktop widgets to Harmattan. It does not add or edit any system homescreen, so it must be kept running and will be shown in multitasking view. It has 5 desktops which can be customized at will with any of the available widget. To change desktop, simply swipe it away left or right: since it uses a ListView, it’s not possible to move from desktop 1 to desktop 5 and viceversa, but there is a scroll bar in the toolbar to instantly to the desidered desktop. Wallpaper is a 1200*818 picture. There is a parallax effect to move it according to current desktop. It is possible to show the application whenever the screen is unlocked. In case of a call and triggered proximity sensor, there is a failsafe control not to overlap call screen. Widgets know if the application is the foreground one and if the current desktop is the one they’re in, so they behave accordly without wasting cpu.

The largest number of Lumia shipments — about 200,000 units — went to Germany in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the research firm Canalys.

Of course, Europeans have always been fonder of Nokia phones than Americans. “Europe has traditionally been a really strong market for Nokia, but Nokia’s been under pressure ever since the introduction of the iPhone, which is when the tide turned,” said Pete Cunningham, a principal analyst at Canalys. “They’ve found competition to be really tough, but this is the beginning of recovery for Nokia.”

Good news for S60V5 device owners.The Nokia store client has been updated to version 1.22(14).

• For updating you need to just open the store client on your device, it will itself prompt you to update to new version. See the screenshot above.
• The most visible change after update on my C6 was free gifts notification on top of the client. But I received the same set of gifts when I first purchased my device. But anyways good gesture for new buyers from Nokia.Check the above screenshots for the whole list of gifted apps.
• Some of the above apps are really good and are paid ones. Call manager, Qik video camera pro, Uploader pro all impart great functionalities to the device software. Just try them and let us know if you want to learn more.

Reuters has joined the party now. They have confirmed through their sources that Lumia 610 and Lumia 900 global version is very much going to be unveiled at MWC. (Reuters) – Nokia will next week unveil a new, cheaper smartphone using Microsoft’s Windows Phone software, targeting a wider market for its new range of smartphones, two sources close to the company said.

Cheaper phones are the key for Nokia and Microsoft in their battle to win a larger share of the market, analysts say.

In addition to the new Lumia 610 Nokia will also unveil at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone, which AT&T is scheduled to roll out in the United States, the sources said.

• Apart from above bug fix the social client has also received performance improvement and is loading and refreshing much faster than the older client. It has become now truly comparable with clients like Facinate and Fmobi in loading times. But what it certainly needs now is facebook chat integration to the client.

• The widget is also getting refreshed automatically and I couldn’t find any freezing as seen on earlier Anna versions.
